Paul in the passage today lays out the path that all humans follow by choice. Often we as Christians believe that our faith makes us immune to heartbreak, trouble, and Murphy's Law. Paul busts that imaginable bubble! The Law was never meant to make us heirs, which could never happen unless we could be reconciled to God first. The Gospel (faith) is the only thing that can reconcile us, so the Gospel is the only thing that can make us heirs with Christ by bringing the "faithful" in right relationship with God. Since faith performs its deed to bring us in right relationship with God, our job is to weather all trials and tribulations while looking to God to ultimately make it right in our lives. Therefore without affecting the world external to us, faith allows us to effect the world that is internal. To believe that our faith will change the external world is pollyanna at best and dangerous to our physical wellbeing at its worst. This is why Paul writes that "We can rejoice, too, when we run into problems and trials, for we know that they help us develop endurance. And endurance develops strength of character, and character strengthens our confident hope of salvation." Romans 5:3-4 NLT.
James 1 opens with this same teaching and provides us that second witness that faith is our panacea to the struggles and pestilence of life. Seek to change your internal world and it will protect you from the external one! Amen.
