Love in the Word Church

Focus: Hebrews 8

The writer of Hebrews in today''s passage asserts 3 major principles - that Jesus is the new High Priest and King, that the tabernacle here on earth is only a simple replica of the one made by God's hands, AND that the new covenant will replace the old one (Law of Moses) forever and will be for and known by everyone! These are powerful words to those who had rejected Jesus as Christ. Quoting Jeremiah 31:31-34, the writer evokes powerful images of the nation's past wickedness which brought the wrath of God upon the nation, they having destroyed themselves, mostly because idolatry. Christ being High Priest in the Tabernacle not made by human hands, trumps any high priest called to the tabernacle made with human hands! This imagery supports yet again the prayer that Jesus taught His disciples to pray - "Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name. Thy Kingdom come, Thy Will be done, on earth as it is in heaven." God's Kingdom existed first in heaven and shall always remain there, while the tabernacle made with hands is no more! The new covenant is greater than the old one because of its promises and guarantees! If the new covenant is better than there is no need for the old one making it obsolete! The old covenant or Law of Moses was seriously flawed because it was a covenant of death - righteousness by self was its central tenet. The new covenant brought life and abundance because the work done by Christ cleansed the believer through its vicarious sacrifice of a human Lamb one and for all rather than the repetitive sacrifice of lesser four-legged lambs. If the Law of Moses was complete, there would have been no need for a new covenant! The Law is not destroyed but made obsolete; so it will disappear from the earth. The promise and guarantee of the new covenant is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
